A brief experiment in sales copy
I once wrote the product and marketing copy for PadFender — a wireless home security system. The device itself was a blank slate that we branded. We ordered the products in bulk from a Chinese electronics manufacturer. But what surprised me was that the instructions for the various devices that made up the system were simply copy/paste translations from Google Translate.
Behind the scenes
Setting up the device without instructions was not intuitive, with many options and settings achieved by a combination of button selections and beeps that verified programming. The difficulty in the setup was compounded by the lack of clear direction. I had to contact the manufacturer to learn how to set up the system, in order to write the installation manual for the American market, and the marketing promotions we provided the retailers and resellers.
The problem
Chinese manufacturers excel at high quality output, yet from experience I’ve found they find it a challenge to sell those massive quantities to the American market, they build lots of stuff and put it online, yet the copy one finds in sites like Alibaba.com is more technical and doesn’t engage the buyer.
